Survey of the state of tourism in Anyksciai district

Policy of tourism in the district is formed by the District of Anyksciai Board and the Mayor’s Institution. Proposals for the District of Anyksciai Board on tourism are provided by the Board of Tourism. Policy of tourism in the district is implemented by Anyksciai Tourism and Information Center (ATIC).

ATIC is a public institution, located at Geguzes street 1 in Anyksciai. The main ATIC goal is to popularize district’s tourist resources and promote incoming tourism.

Natural resources.  In 2007 Anyksciai district was granted the status of the resort territory. The district is abundant with lakes the largest of which is Rubikiai (the old name “Anykstis”) with its 16 islands. During St. John festival traditional sailing regatta takes place on Rubikiai lake. There are plenty of rivers the biggest of which, the Sventoji, runs through the city of Anyksciai. Rivers, such as: Sventoji, Virinta, Anyksta are favorite among the aquatic tourism enthusiasts. The district is plentiful of forests. The largest is Simoniai Woods. The district prides itself in abundant wild animal and fish resources. Regional park, forest reserves and reservoirs are established to protect nature.  Tourists enjoy wild animal enclosure in Mikieriai, an arboretum in Troskunai forestry district, Traupis botanical garden. Tourists are enticed to the district by boulders Puntukas and the brother of Puntukas, Queen’s Quagmire, Vetygala rock exposure, mounds, and other natural wonders. Many camping sites are arranged all over the district’s territory in which sanctuary nature lovers have peaceful picnics. Anyksciai forest service and Anyksciai Regional Park take care of the camping sites.

National tourism routs. Three national tourism routs cross Anyksciai district. Those are: aquatic tourism track on the river Sventoji; auto tourism rout, extending into three directions: from Anyksciai toward Moletai, toward Kupiskis and toward Ukmerge; bicycle rout to Moletai.

The narrow railroad is a technical achievement that has European significance. During the summer season the narrow railroad takes passengers on regular routs Anyksciai Rubikiai and Anyksciai Troskunai.

Museums. Seven museums are open in the district of Anyksciai. The Horse museum in Niuronys is the first out of four horse museums functioning in the world.

Culinary heritage. Gourmands are welcome to try one of the three dishes that were awarded the title of the culinary heritage: fruit and berry wine “Voruta” made in Anyksciai, dumplings, koldunai, in a café “Saltiniai” in Kavarskas, plovas in a village tourism estate “Villa of Baronas” Cultural and historical monuments. There are plenty of churches, manors, monuments, mounds in the district. According to some historians e.g. Tomas Baranauskas, Gintautas Zabiela, the name “Lietuva” (Lithuania) is derived from Latava, the name of the mound that stands out in the district.  

Other services. 35 village tourism estates are registered in the district. Actively functioning are those: Kalita, a down hill skiing center, “Health Oasis” (lt. Sveikatos oaze”), swimming pool and sauna complex, entertaining karting and go-cart drive in the Center of the Technical Sports, educational bread making program, educational program “Wine Road.” There are two hotels and about fifteen dining places in Anyksciai.

All of these tourist resources are enticing more and more guests. Over 210 thousand tourists visited Anyksciai district in 2008.
