Survey of the state of culture in Anyksciai district

Cultural policy in the district is formed by the District of Anyksciai Board and the Mayor’s Institution. Proposals for the District of Anyksciai Board on culture are provided by the Board of Culture. Cultural policy in the district is coordinated by the municipal administration’s Department of Education, Culture and Sports and the department’s specialist responsible for the administration of culture. It is implemented by these institutions:

Anyksciai Cultural Center (ACC)
The ACC has 14 divisions. The main goal of the ACC and its divisions is to enable the expression and the development of amateur and professional art, and promote community’s socio-cultural unity. Every year the ACC is engaged in a multitude of cultural projects, organizes hundreds of events, celebrations, concert tours.
In 2008 work on renovation of the ACC had started.

Anyksciai A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Zukauskas Memorial Museum
The museum is composed of three departments: the writers’ memorial museum, land’s history and agrarian culture (the Horse Museum). The museum’s collection is exhibited in those shows: the cottage of Antanas Baranauskas, Antanas Vienuolis-Zukauskas house-museum, Jonas Biliunas memorial estate, Brone Buivydaite memorial house museum, Liudvika and Stanislovas Didziuliai memorial estate museum, Anyksciai Chapel and Chamber Arts Center, the Horse Museum, History of the Narrow Railroad exhibit, the observation tower.
The main goal of the museum is to collect, protect and popularize the museum’s valuables reflecting Anyksciai land’s culture, literature, history, agrarian culture, the development of technology. The museum is, also, engaged in publishing activity, actively implements educational and cultural tourism projects and is one of the main participators and organizers of the city holidays.
A. Baranauskas and A. Vienuolis-Zukauskas memorial Museum is the most frequented municipal museum in Lithuania.

Anyksciai district municipal Liudvika and Stanislovas Didziuliai Public Library
The library has six divisions, such as: children’s literature; document replenishing; readers’ service and bibliography; land’s history and publishing; library’s public image creation; household and technical support; and 22 branches. Since 1998 a bibliobus is functioning.  At the present time it is a well equipped modern library-on-wheels serving about 50 district’s villages. It is specially equipped to serve children, the disabled and the elderly.
 
The library is actively engaged in various computerization and cultural projects.

In 2008 construction of the new Anyksciai Public Library has begun.

Cultural activity in the district is implemented by the associations, communities, and public organizations. The World Anykstenai (native residents of the city of Anyksciai) Society is publishing the monthly “World Anykstenas” and organizes congresses. Informal educational institutions, Anyksciai School of Music and Anyksciai School of Creation and Arts, contribute significantly to the planning and implementation of the cultural projects.

In the district of Anyksciai next to the traditional events, such as: traditional celebration of culture and equestrian sports “Run Run Steed” in Niuronys, events of the City’s Holiday, St. Ann’s festival, new traditions of the chamber events in nontraditional locations near the objects of cultural, natural, historical inheritance start to shape. These are: festival of  the professional music” Rubikiai, the Shore of Songs”, festival of bards “Purple Evening”, international festival of the young organists, acclaimed events for the youth, such as: international camp of creativity “ Desires”, cycle of creative and improvisational events “Wheel of Light” (lt. Sviesos ratas”), movement of ethnic culture and unusual folklore “Folk-virus” etc.

Since 2001 every year in the district the memorial Terese Mikeliunaite award is being granted to Anyksciai land’s resident, community group, collective or a person native to Anyksciai for their merits for the land’s culture.
Since 2005 the new model of financing the cultural events is functioning. In 2008 newly approved cultural projects support program aims to enable high quality, multifaceted, accessible for all, open activity of the cultural institutions. Every year more and more funds from the municipal budget are being allotted for this purpose: 240.4 thousand litas in 2007, 300.1 thousand litas in 2008, 350 thousand litas in 2009. The number of applications is rising as well.
