Geographical location

District of Anyksciai is one of the biggest in the country.

Its area is 1765 square kilometers, its population is about 32 thousand, out of which 96% are Lithuanians, 3% Russians, 0.5% Poles.
District’s administrative center, Anyksciai, is about 52 kilometers away from Utena. The Western part of the district is at the border of lowland of the river Nevezis. The biggest part of the district is situated on the West Aukstaiciai (Highland) plateau, transitioning to Aukstaiciai hills. Here’s the district’s 194 meter peak. The river Sventoji with its tributaries runs through the district. There are 76 lakes, such as: 968 hectares occupying Rubikiai (the old name Anykstis), 200 hectare lake Suosa, 192 hectare Viesintas, and 6 reservoirs. Forests, mostly coniferous, pine and spruce, and mixed ones occupy 29.8% of the districts territory. The largest is Simoniai Woods, Ramaldava and Troskunai Forests.

The industry, such as: construction material, welding electrode, wine production is concentrated in Anyksciai. There are over 250 cultural monuments. In the summer of 2007 Anyksciai was granted the status of a resort territory. Aukstaitija (Highland), a geographic and ethnographic region, historically situated in the Eastern part of Lithuania has been mentioned in the chronicles since the XIV century. Aukstaiciai land is situated in the Western part of the region, according to the geographical regional map, on the West Aukstaiciai plateau, where the hills do not end yet and the lowland does not start yet. Its outline, narrowing toward South triangle, slightly reminds the contour of the Republic. Its opposite borders are 40-50 kilometers apart. The highest hills in the district are Storiai hills. Their peak is 194 meters above the sea level. Meanwhile, the river Sventoji South of Kavarskas penetrates so deep that it is only about 60 meters above the sea level. Quarts sand deposits were discovered in the region and are being utilized.

The river Sventoji divides Anyksciai land into the hilly left bank and the rolling right bank with some lowland. Sandy loamy topsoil dominates in the hilly parts, often with boulders. The soil in the rolling part has unified structure, however, it is impermeable, tends to soak up water.
District’s territory is 1764.9 square kilometers, the bigger part of it, 56.8%, is the land used for agriculture. Only the lowland regions of Lithuania, the Middle Lithuania, Suvalkija, surpass Anyksciai district in the size of the land used for agriculture.
